Meet James Conahan

Insurance planning should feel
personal—because it is.

I am a Clearwater, Florida native, Army veteran, and financial professional who has spent the last four years working with retirees and families, with a focus on Medicare and insurance planning.

What matters most to me is not starting with a product. It is sitting down with someone, understanding what is actually worrying them, and helping them make sense of the options available.

A little about me

Home is still Tampa Bay.

I grew up in Clearwater and today live in Tarpon Springs with my wife and children. This is the community where I was raised, where I am raising my own family, and where many of the people I work with have spent decades building their lives.

After serving in the U.S. Army, I eventually found my way into insurance and financial services. Over the last four years, my work has centered largely on retirees—helping people navigate Medicare, understand insurance decisions, protect their families, and think through risks that can affect retirement.

I also work as a registered financial professional. I have passed FINRA's General Securities Representative Examination (Series 7) and NASAA's Uniform Combined State Law Examination (Series 66).

Family is a big part of why protecting what people have built matters to me.
Why I care

I almost left this industry six months after I entered it.

When I first got into insurance, I saw a side of the business that made me question whether I wanted any part of it: high-pressure call centers, deceptive pitches, and conversations driven more by commissions than by the person on the other end of the phone.

It did not feel like helping people. It felt like using them.

Fortunately, I met a mentor who showed me a different way to work independently, seperate from the agencies and call centers. How to understand the person first, and use insurance only when it genuinely solves a problem. That changed the direction of my career.

The moments that changed my perspective

Insurance stopped feeling like a product when I saw what happened after the sale was long forgotten.

I have spoken with a grieving family while helping deliver a death claim from coverage we had put in place years earlier. Nothing makes grief easy, but seeing the financial relief arrive during one of the hardest moments of a family's life makes the purpose of the work very real.

I have heard from clients after narrowly surviving major health events who were shocked by how little they had to pay because the coverage we had carefully selected did exactly what we hoped it would do.

Those are the moments I think about when I meet someone new, not the product.

What the work means to me

The value often shows up years after the conversation.

A good insurance decision can be easy to forget when life is going well. Its purpose becomes clearer when life suddenly is not.

“

When a family loses someone

The policy is no longer paperwork. It can mean time to grieve without immediately worrying about a mortgage, funeral costs, bills, or how the household will stay afloat.

“

When a health crisis happens

The plan is no longer a comparison chart. It becomes access to care and protection from costs that could otherwise disrupt years of careful saving.

“He didn't choose to retire. His body retired him.”

That experience shaped the way I think about retirement: saving is important, but so is remembering what all of that work and saving was supposed to make possible.

A lesson I learned from my grandfather

Retirement is not only about having enough money.

My grandfather was the most financially successful person in our immediate family. He built businesses, owned property, saved diligently, and created real wealth. When I was young, he was always talking about the things we were going to do someday—Disney, a boat to the Bahamas, an RV trip north to see the snow.

But he also worked constantly. Many of my memories with him are riding along while he collected checks, sitting in back offices while he worked, or making trips to the bank. He continued working until roughly age 75, when pain and declining mobility finally made the decision for him.

By then, many of those “someday” plans were no longer physically possible. He had done an incredible job building and saving—but had very little time left to enjoy what he had built.

That stays with me when I talk with people who have spent 40 or 50 years identifying themselves as workers and savers. Sometimes part of planning is simply helping someone feel confident enough to give themselves permission to enjoy what they worked so hard for—if that is what they truly want.

What you can expect from me

A professional relationship built around conversation.

I want people to understand why a recommendation is being made and feel comfortable saying yes, no, or not yet.

I'll Ask Before I Recommend

Your concerns, goals, existing coverage, family, and priorities should shape the recommendation—not the other way around.

I'll Tell You When You Don't Need Something

If what you already have is appropriate, keeping it can be the right recommendation.

I'll Explain the Tradeoffs

There is no perfect product. You should understand the advantages, limitations, costs, and alternatives before making a decision.

I Won't Ask You to Buy on Meeting One

The first conversation is for understanding your situation. No pressure. No forcing a solution. No “closing.”

You Keep Control

I can research and recommend. You decide whether an option makes enough sense to move forward.

I'll Be Here After the Decision

The relationship should not end when coverage begins. Questions, claims, changes, and future reviews are part of the work too.

You do not need a product in mind to talk with me.

If something about Medicare, insurance, retirement protection, or your family's financial security has been sitting in the back of your mind, that is enough of a reason to start a conversation.
